BEHIND THE LENS

Thanks for checking out my website!

My name is Brooke Kern. I grew up on the Iron Range of Minnesota, and I have been involved in sports photography, mostly for newspapers, in some capacity since 2005.

It was in the summer of 2005 that my father bought what became my first DSLR camera, the Canon EOS 20D. Originally, it was suppose to be for my father to capture photos of my older brother during senior year, but I got that camera in my hands that summer and the rest was history.

I fell in love capturing the action in sports. Learning all the buttons and what they did to create the photo and timing a shot just right, it grew into a passion quickly.

After photographing for my hometown newspaper all through high school and my first two years of college, I enrolled at Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minn. for its photography program. That is where my love for sports photography grew into a love for photography as a whole. We were immersed in the world of portrait, commercial (product), family and even pet photography while learning work flow and post processing techniques.

Now four years later, I am the Sports Lead for the Stevens County Times, formerly the Morris Sun Tribune and Hancock Record, so I still photograph sports almost every day. Along with sports action, I also enjoy photographing athlete portraits, seniors and weddings.
